How Long Do Pumpkins Last Once Picked?

Picking your own pumpkin is one of the best parts of autumn, but it helps to know how long it will stay fresh once you bring it home. The good news is that a healthy, uncarved pumpkin can last for several weeks when stored properly, giving you plenty of time to enjoy it before Halloween.

How Long Does an Uncarved Pumpkin Last?

An uncarved pumpkin will usually last between eight and twelve weeks, depending on its condition, variety and where it is stored. Pumpkins picked with firm skin, a strong stem and no soft patches will naturally last longer.

Keep your pumpkin somewhere cool, dry and well ventilated. A porch, garage or cool room can work well, provided it is protected from heavy rain, frost and direct heat. Avoid placing it on damp ground, as moisture can cause the base to soften and rot.

It is also worth checking your pumpkin every few days. If you notice soft spots, mould or a change in smell, it may be starting to deteriorate.

How Long Does a Carved Pumpkin Last?

Once carved, a pumpkin has a much shorter lifespan. Most carved pumpkins last between three and seven days, although cooler weather may help them stay fresh for a little longer.

For the best results, wait until close to Halloween before carving. Remove as much of the stringy flesh as possible, keep the pumpkin somewhere cool and avoid leaving it in strong sunlight. Battery-operated lights are also a better option than candles, as they produce less heat.

How Can You Make a Pumpkin Last Longer?

Choose a pumpkin without cuts, bruises or soft areas. Carry it from underneath rather than by the stem, as a damaged stem can make it spoil more quickly.

Once home, gently wipe the outside clean and allow it to dry fully. Turning it occasionally can also prevent moisture from gathering underneath.

When Should You Go Pumpkin Picking?

For autumn decorations, visiting earlier in October should still give you plenty of time, provided you leave your pumpkin uncarved and store it carefully. For carving, simply keep it whole until a few days before Halloween.
