How Pumpkins Grow From Seed to Pumpkin Patch

Every autumn, thousands of families visit a pumpkin patch to pick the perfect pumpkin for carving, decorating or even cooking. But before pumpkins are ready for pumpkin picking season, they go through a fascinating growing process that starts many months earlier. Like any kind of farming, the biggest battle is the weather! But despite tough growing conditions, we have started to see the growth of our largest pumpkin field yet! 

Growing pumpkins is a year-round commitment, with farmers beginning preparations long before autumn arrives. The process starts in spring when pumpkin seeds are planted into carefully prepared soil. Pumpkins grow best in nutrient-rich ground with plenty of sunlight and space to spread. Since pumpkin plants can quickly expand across large areas, fields need to be planned carefully to allow enough room for vines to grow.

Once planted, the seeds begin to germinate and small green shoots emerge from the soil. As the weather warms up, these shoots develop into larger plants with long trailing vines and broad leaves. Throughout the summer months, pumpkin plants need regular care including watering, monitoring and protection from weeds and pests.

One of the most important stages in the growing process is pollination. Pumpkin plants produce bright yellow flowers, and pollination often relies on bees transferring pollen between blooms. Without successful pollination, pumpkins cannot develop properly. This is why healthy ecosystems and pollinators play such an important role in farming.

After pollination takes place, small pumpkins begin to appear on the vine. Over the following weeks they continue to grow larger, changing from green to their familiar orange colour as they mature. Depending on the variety, pumpkins can vary hugely in size, shape and colour, with some remaining small and decorative while others grow into giant pumpkins weighing many kilograms.

By early autumn, pumpkin fields transform into the pumpkin patches visitors know and love. This is when pumpkin picking season begins and families can head out to choose their favourites directly from the field.
