How to Pick a Ripe Pumpkin at the Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkin picking is one of the best parts of autumn, but with so many shapes, colours and sizes to choose from, how do you know when you have found a ripe pumpkin? Whether you are choosing one for carving, cooking or decorating, there are a few simple things to look for at the pumpkin patch.

Check the Colour

A ripe pumpkin should have a strong, even colour for its variety. While classic orange pumpkins are the most familiar, many varieties are naturally white, green, striped or mottled, so colour alone is not always the deciding factor.

Feel the Skin

Gently press the pumpkin with your thumb. The skin should feel firm and hard, without soft spots, deep cuts or bruising.

Small surface marks are normal, especially on pumpkins grown outdoors, but avoid anything that feels unusually soft.

Look at the Stem

A healthy stem is another good sign. Choose a pumpkin with a firm, dry stem where possible, rather than one that feels soft or damaged.

Always carry your pumpkin from underneath instead of lifting it by the stem, as this can cause it to break.

Choose One That Suits What You Need

For carving, look for a pumpkin with a stable base and enough smooth surface area for your design.

For cooking, smaller varieties can often be easier to prepare and may have denser flesh.

At Hatter’s Farm, there are plenty of pumpkins to choose from, so take your time, explore the patch and find the one that is just right for you.
