What is a Pumpkin Patch?
28/02/2026
When autumn arrives and Halloween approaches, families across the UK start searching for the perfect pumpkin. But a pumpkin patch is far more than a place to simply pick one up, it’s an experience. Traditionally, a pumpkin patch is a working farm field where pumpkins grow naturally in rows, allowing visitors to walk through the crop and choose one straight from the vine. It turns a seasonal purchase into an adventure.
At Hatters Farm, that idea is taken to another level. Instead of a quick stop, visiting the patch becomes a full day out built around exploring, discovering and enjoying the outdoors together.
The heart of the experience is, of course, the pumpkins. Visitors grab a wheelbarrow and head into the fields where over 100,000 home-grown pumpkins and squash grow across the farm, with more than 75 varieties to choose from. From tiny decorative pumpkins to giant carving showstoppers and wonderfully unusual shapes.
But what surprises most first-time visitors is how much more there is beyond pumpkin picking.
As you wander the farm, you’ll find roaming street actors appearing around corners, themed areas perfect for autumn photos (including the famous giant welly boot and vintage Morris Minor), and plenty of open space for children to explore.
There’s also a whole range of activities included with entry:
- Haunted Mad House
- Hay bale maze and Bale Mountain
- Indoor farm play area
- Duck racing and live entertainment
- Evening events with music
For families wanting even more adventure, optional extras include the maize maze, face painting and even the pumpkin cannon, where visitors can launch pumpkins at targets.
No autumn day would be complete without seasonal treats either. The food court offers hot drinks, waffles, burgers and toasties, while fire pits provide the perfect place to roast marshmallows and warm up after exploring the fields.
In simple terms, a pumpkin patch should feel like stepping into autumn itself with fresh air, muddy boots, laughter and memories. That’s exactly what Hatters Farm is designed to be! Not just somewhere you buy a pumpkin, but somewhere your Halloween traditions begin.
